TITLE: Analyst, Software Systems Group

The incumbent will be an integral  member  of  the  Software
Systems  Group,  the  objectives  of which are to maintain a
smoothly running, state-of-art research and educational com-
puting facility (Facility) and to assist the users in making
the best use of the Facility.

DUTIES

System Analysis                                        (70%)
o Assists with trouble-shooting to help identify software or
  hardware reasons for system failure.
o Provides technical advice to  users  of  the  Facility  to
  satisfy their research and educational needs.
o Takes  responsibility  for  the  maintenance  of  specific
  software items as determined by the Manager.
o Evaluates, plans and carries out software upgrades.
o Evaluates, tests, and  incorporates  externally  developed
  hardware  and software products into the existing environ-
  ment.
o Participates in preventative maintenance to help  maintain
  a smoothly running Facility.
o Monitors usage of the Facility and collects data for  sys-
  tems  measurement and evaluation, and provides recommenda-
  tions for the organization and expansion of the Facility.
o Provides backup maintenance capability for other  analysts
  in the Group.
o Participates in setting policy for the usage of the Facil-
  ity and enforces such policy.

Software Development                                   (30%)
o Originates and performs system analysis/design,  implemen-
  tation,  testing and documentation of specialized programs
  to meet the research, educational and administrative needs
  of  the  community  using the Facility.  The incumbent may
  assume the role of a project leader in carrying  out  this
  function.
o Cooperates with the hardware  group  in  the  development,
  implementation, testing and documentation of computer sys-
  tems projects.

QUALIFICATIONS

o A minimum of a B.Sc. in computing science, or related dis-
  cipline with a strong background in computing science.
o A minimum of two year's systems and  application  program-
  ming  experience  in a UNIX environment, preferably a dis-
  tributed computing environment with  SUN  Microsystem  and
  DEC  equipment,  and a minimum of one year's experience in
  systems administration in a distributed computing environ-
  ment.
o The ability to prioritize his/her activities and work with
  minimal supervision.
o The ability to work  efficiently  while  being  constantly
  interrupted  by  the  faculty,  students  and staff in the
  School.
o Proficiency in at least three of the following categories:
  Text/word  processing technology, Graphics utilities, VLSI
  CAD tools, operating  system  and  distributing  computing
  concepts,  AI  technology, Software Engineering Methodolo-
  gies and Programming Languages.
o Ability to communicate effectively, both  in  writing  and
  orally,  with  technical and non-technical staff, faculty,
  and students, and the ability to maintain a  good  working
  relationship with other staff, faculty and students.
o Ability to work effectively in a programming team and par-
  ticipate in software design review.
