LABORATORY COORDINATOR Department of Computational Science University of Saskatchewan A Laboratory Coordintator is required by the Department of Computational Science. The holder of this position will be responsible primarily for providing day-to-day operational and software support for instructional and research laboratories within the Department. In the short term, these responsibilities will pertain to a major undergraduate micro computer laboratory known as the Maclab as well as a number of high quality engineering workstations attached to the Advanced Computing Laboratory. The Maclab is an AppleTalk local area network consisting of 40 student workstations, two MacJanet file servers and shared printers. The high quality workstations are connected to a shared file server via a local area Ethernet. These specific responsibilities will change as the laboratories themselves evolve. Operational tasks will include starting and stopping the systems, performing backups, and installing and configuring system software. Software support tasks will include installing acquired software packages and developing utility programs to meet local requirements. Local programs will focus on instructional application. Administrative responsibilities will include participation in the Department's Facilities Committee's efforts to plan for and implement new facilities for the laboratories. Secondary responsibilities relating to hardware will include overseeing maintenance of the facilities (initial problem diagnosis, shipment of the machinery to the hardware service organization, and reinstalling repaired machines) and miscellaneous interconnection of components, including asynchronous serial devices, Ethernet devices, and so on. The successful applicant for this position will hold a Master of Science degree in Computational Science or equivalent and will have considerable knowledge of and practical experience with the UNIX Operating System, the Macintosh computer, the C programming language, AppleTalk and Ethernet. Experience with the use of computer networks in academic settings is highly desirable. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
