I am looking for technical descriptions of how the following two technologies work: 1) high wavelength (infra-red or other) transmitters/receivers used in remote control units (e.g. for your TV, VCR, joystick). [The ultimate goal being to hook up such a transmitter to a home computer, and be able receive such transmissions at several locations in the same room]. 2) hardware to recognize different audio sounds (by pitch or if possible, syntatic recognization of words). For example I've seen 'play' circuits built that distinguish several different frequencies; another example is Heathkit's Hero1 robot which they claim recognizes 20-5000 Hz with 1 in 256 resolution (8 convient bits). Thanks to anyone who can point me to good reference material or pass on advice and experiences that relate to the above two topics.
