I remember someone asking for a floating-point A/D converter once upon a time. I had previously heard rumors of such a product, but didn't have the hard facts. Now I do. From the Micro Networks newsletter: "Micro Networks, a Division of Unitrode Corporation, announces MN5420 - the industry's first, Wide-Dynamic-Range, Floating-Point A/D Converter. MN5420 produces a 16-bit stream of data - 4 bits of exponent, 12 bits of mantissa - at an incredible 320 KHz rate (3.1 us conversion time) and can digitize signals as large as 10V or as small as 10uV for an impressive 120dB dynamic range. ... MN5420 is fabricated as 4 thin-film hybrids on a small p.c. card. The entire circuit is mounted in a 3"x4"x5/8" shielded aluminum case and potted with a thermally conductive compound. MN5420 is priced at $1,425.00 for 1-9 pieces, and small quantities for evaluation purposes are available from stock."
