Some Smalltalk items: Smalltalk is finally commercially available from someone other than Xerox. Syte Information Technology (San Diego - 619-457-2270) is offering it on their 3000 system (based on the 16032). It shares system resources with UniSyte - their System 5 look-alike. Pricing is expected to be about $1500. I asked them to send me more info -- when it arrives I'll summarize. Xerox is now offering a "trial basis" licensing arrangement for Smalltalk-80. You get to use the Smalltalk-80 Virtual Image internally for a four month period for $5K. You can renew or upgrade to a full commercial license within the contract period. Xerox has a videotape of Smalltalk available for $125. Looked at it yesterday -- it's basically a demo of what's in the "orange book". It give a good feel of what it would be like to have Smalltalk on a Dorado -- amazingly fast... You can order yours (the videotape, I mean) from: Xerox Palo Alto Research Center 3333 Coyote Hill Road Palo Alto, CA 94304 Attn: Communications Group The default format is 3/4" U-matic, but I understand that other formats are available. Is anyone out there actually running a Smalltalk system? Any application work going on? - Karl Freburger (decvax!ittvax!wxlvax!freb new address!)
