[net.lang.st80] Smalltalk Licencing

kevin@harvard.ARPA (Kevin Crowston) (06/10/85)

I have been told that there are different versions of the SmallTalk
Image. Version 1 was given to the various groups who developed
SmallTalk interpreters (as described in one of the SmallTalk books).
These people were given (perhaps accidentally?) the right to
distribute this version of the image without charge. Later versions
of the image may require a royalty to Xerox.

If I recall, to get Berkley Smalltalk with the Image you
had to present evidence of having gotten the licence from
Xerox. On he other hand, Kevin is correct, we at Apple
can distribute Version 1 with our Smalltalk system.
