I am working on a project that is in search of an implementation language. My colleagues and I feel that some form of data-object oriented language would be appropriate. We have heard some good comments about Smalltalk and wish to learn more about it. We are especially interested in finding a good implementation for the IBM-PC/XT. So if anyone knows of a vendor of such a product, that information would be very useful. In addition, any information such as product reviews, personal experience, or general advice about finding information on Smalltalk would be of value. If you can be of any service please respond. Thanx in advance. Chuck Duff, the primary author of Neon, an object oriented language for the Macintosh is almost finished with a product for the IBM-PC. It is an object oriented language modeled after smalltalk, as was Neon, but is even more smalltalk-like. I have not seen the language, called Actor, but it should be out in the fall. The language defaults to late binding, but one has the option of early binding. This should improve speed. If anyone is interest in more information, I can post Chuck's company's address on the net.

The versions of Smalltalk for the IBM-PC are Methods by Digitalk and Smalltalk-80 version 2 by Softsmarts in Woodside, California. Methods is a modified subset of Smalltalk with a character oriented windowing interface. It runs on the PC/XT with fairly reasonable performance. Softsmarts Smalltalk is a genuine implementation of the full Xerox Smalltalk-80 release using bit-map graphics for the PC/AT. Digitalk advertises in Byte and Softsmarts in CACM. Other members of the net will likely be able to provide more details. I believe someone posted brief performance evaluations of these a couple months ago. There is also a good implementation of ST version 1 (with extensions) for the Apple Macintosh from Apple Computer. Contact me if you need more information. (Another more obscure ST subset for the PC is/was Asolv Smalltalk by Christopher Maicie.) Bruce D.
