Well, here are the results of the can.ai straw readership poll.
Many thanks to all who responded.
A couple obvious remarks. The number of respondents is low (13) and
the majority (9) consists of PhD or MS students. Both of these results
are not particularly surprising. It's difficult to know to what
extent low response is due to low readership of an essentially dead
newsgroup or, as one respondent suggested, the fact that only students
can afford the time to read net news. I must admit some
disappointment that there were not more non-university respondents,
since I am considering private-sector/govt career alternatives and
would prefer to remain in Canada.
It was rightly pointed out in one response that a more complete list
of Canadian AIers might be obtained from the subscription lists of
Canadian AI Newsletter, AI Journal and the like. There also exists a
lengthy report of the Director General of Research and Development
listing vendors of ES-related services and products in Canada. I tend
to feel that one e-mail address is worth 10 names from such lists.
Hell, even _I'm_ on those subscription lists :-).
It was also pointed out that there are many 100% AI firms in Canada
that do not have net access or do not wish their employees posting to
the net. Doesn't sound like a very appealing research environment to
me. C'mon you Canadian AI companies! Get connected. You don't have to
tell us what's going on in the back room.

I should also point out that there are other researchers here that are
doing AI-type research, but they may not respond to your posting since
they are not regular news readers. In my group (The Division of
Behavioural Research) we have about 7 psychologists working on AI and
human factors issues. Much of this work involves advanced television,
broadly defined. We have specific projects on natural-language
interfaces, database design, neural networks, advanced music, and
computer-aided instruction. If you are interested, I can encourage
these people to also fill out your form.
