I am working for the German department at Acadia University and I was asked to write (or if I could write) a program to be used by german students. The program is to carry on a conversation with the student, both asking the student questions and having them answer them, and letting the student ask the computer questions and have the computer give an appropriate response. The questions can be fairly basic such as'where do you live', 'what are you studying', etc.. We also want the computer to be able to check the student's grammer - did they use the right verb tense, does the sentence make sense? I know there is a program called Eliza that is similar to this but I haven't a copy of it. I've looked at a program called doctor which is written in LISP but it is rather slow and I have very little experience with LISP. I'm interested in something written it C or PASCAL that could possibly be modified to run in German. The prof I'm working for does not know the first thing about computers so he would be willing to accept that it is not possible or practical at the current time. If anyone has done something like this or has any good ideas about how I might do you please send me E-mail. Thanks. Katherine Layton 880039l@Acadia 880039l@aucs.UUCP

I just wanted to thank everyone that responded to my message about an Eliza program in German, I received some useful help. Sorry I could not respond individually but there seems to be a problem sending mail to certain addresses from this site. Katherine Layton
