[net.music] double live Hawkwind lp

D3U@PSUVM.BITNET (02/28/85)

There is a double live album by Hawkwind called Space Ritual live in Liver-
pool and London. issued 1972
the original cover folded oue into a poster with lots of cosmic pictures and
esoteric mysticism. Both Brock and Calvert are on this one, but I don't remembe
r who all else, just that it's basically the crew on Doremi Fasol Latido. this
would include Lemmy, Detmar.
Each side is 18 or 25 minutes of continuous music, sometimes even the first
song of the next side can be heard for a few seconds as the current side ends.
Lotsa heavy rock that sounds like it's traveled across the galaxy through magne
tic storms and etc before it was received on Earth. features songs from Doremi
Fasol Latido and In Search of Space along with many not found on studio albums.
Brainstorm, Time We left, Masters of the Universe, and Space is Deep are here
and expanded (this live lp really JAMS and ROCKS OUT!!!!!).
There are several spoken pieces interpreted by sounds, including:
A spoken renditition of the lyrics to Space is Deep introduces that song.
Ten Seconds of Forever last thoughts of a dying space explorer
Sonic Attack vividly describes the gruesome signs of sonic attack, great stuff
to upset your neighbors, too bad or Maybe Fortunate that no Punk band covered
this one.
More on the music: often sounds tight, like they practice together
There are softer moments in 7 X 7 and Space is Deep.
Some good old rock'n'roll-- Born to Go, Brainstorm
A real heavy up tempo blues rocker sounding like Canned Heat (late sixties band
) processed through synthesizers--called Orgone Accumulator (this is a personal
favorite) and it jams for 10 minutes out in space metal aether
Lotsa heavy metal space distortion and jams which themselves are metaphors for
outer space-- turn oout the lights and SEE the nebulae and multitude of stars
and dust particles yourself!
Van Halen and other bands may have flashier guitar leads and sound, but they
still could take a few lessons from Hawkwind to producer some real metal that
has more content (but if they did, Van Halen would be just as obscure as Hwind)
and even artistry in that the sound is always appropriate for the lyrics.
Hawkwind can lay full claim to the lable "progressive rock" and "experimental".

"Space Ritual" live in Liverpool and London is one excellent album well worth
the price for both discs. Highly recomended! Get out the Headphones and Crank
it UP!!!
                                the cosmic Ray

For acoustic numbers, I recomend their first lp, "Hawkwind", with Hurry on Sun-
down and Mirror of Illusion (another classic), and the lp "Doremi Fasol Latido"
featuring acoustic jamming on Space is Deep and a slow, mellow folky song,
"Watcher in the Skies" (or similar).
