They are given posthumously to people who have made the supreme sacrifice to keep their genes out of our pool. Style counts, not everyone who dies from their own stupidity can win. I don't have a more recent example than the person who pulled a vending machine over and was crushed while trying to break into it. My father tells of a man who lost a finger while timing his old Ford. They had a timing hole that you stuck a timing plug into while you turned the engine over.
