Judge Ben Dickinson dismissed a traffic ticket issued to an Amish man for not carrying a sign on his horse-drawn carriage marking it as a slow moving vehicle. Herman Zook, 27, claimed his community should be exempted from the state law due to their religion that forbids display of bright colors and symbols of government authority. .....SOMETHING 'MESHUGGA' by Peter Rowe Sylvia Cronin wants to sell her Jupiter, Fla. condominium real bad. She has been trying for six weeks now but to no avail. So she announced a sales gimmick, a quart of chicken soup each week for a year to any buyer....<it couldn't hurt> .....UNCONVENTIONAL SCHOOL RAISES LOCAL HACKLES ...story of the week by Pat Flynn The "international headquarters" of God Unlimited University of Healing sits along State Highway 94. It's been there for three years. Four trailers and a outdoor toilet makeup the campus. Herbert Beierle, dean and president, said recently, "It's a very quiet place." Said Mike Mikesell, who lives nearby, "It's like Jim Jones-they're nuts." You see, some members of Beierle's university, which he also calls a church practice nudity. "Those who don't want to don't have to wear clothes, but I tell people to use good judgement." But trouble was created about three weeks ago. It started with a motorcycle. "Riding down the road buck-naked with a helmet on, most ridiculous thing I've ever seen," said Bill Jeffries, another nearby resident. This comes on the heels of a previous episode when a naked church member was spotted at the roadside mailboxes as a schoolbus full of children pulled up. Some neighbors also complain about the group chanting. "This is not a sex farm," Beierle said. Beierle, a former real estate salesman and publisher of a weekly newspaper <hmmm>, studied at Marquette University and the University of Chicago but his degree in divinity is from the College of Divine Metaphysics in Indianapolis. .....TRAFFIC TIE-UP by Peter Rowe A funny thing happened on his way to traffic court. Cory Masek of Chicago was on his way down to answer four earlier violations when he ignored a red light, sped away and bashed into a police car that was attempting to block him. The high speed chase that followed ended up in <hang on> the traffic court parking lot. Judge Daniel White said "he picked the wrong place to run. There are usually more police in traffic court than there are in district police stations." .....MISS LIBERTY A JERSEYITE ??? A newly discovered document reveals that the Statue of Liberty is actually in New Jersey and not New York, a New Jersey state historian said recently. The historian, Kevin Wright, said, " There can be no argument anymore whose jurisdiction Liberty stands in." He said he uncovered an official treaty signed between New Jersey and New York in 1889 that proves his point. New York officials base their legal argument on a 1834 document and have long claimed the island as their own. The statue has a New York postal address, is protected by New York police and pays her taxes to New York. The Dec.23, 1889 treaty and accompanying map cited by Wright were the work of a Joint Boundary Commission and stated the boundary fight was "finally and conclusively" resolved, the historian said. New York Mayor Koch refused to discuss the find.
