[net.bizarre] The Last Subgrunt

worp@ih1ap.UUCP (Federation for Banning Barcodes) (08/27/85)

The boy appeared somewhat lost. Somewhat confused.

Somewhat lonely.

Why? he wondered, then stopped himself. It was always this way. It had
been like this last summer, and the years before that. Always. And
always he had proclaimed that that would be the last time that would
happen, and alays he would be wrong.

Always.

He was the Last Subgrunt. The last summer student of his kind to roam
the halls of AT&T Bell Labs in Naperville. He had survived the exodus
of the Dutch Liberation Movement, of Tashas United against NaStashas,
of Auburn Maned Bitch Arguing with Rios, of Madhack Software, of Doc,
of Who Else?, and the rest of the Mail Wars II party. They had passed
onto the Valhalla of the Second Wars, as he would come Friday.

They could make a movie, perhaps, what with the current trend in
movies about upwardly moving people like them. What would they
call it? The Subgrunts? Mail Wars? Cause Summer Students Just Wanna
Have Fun? (Phun?)

Ah well, he thought.

The Second Wars had passed, far better than the First and far nicer,
he thought. There was something very anticlimactic about malevolently
attacking the account of your companion...so went the Second Wars.

The End.

The two words floated in his mind, very strong. They would be back
next year, his Federation for Banning Barcodes, Mike's DLM, Jean's
AMBAR, Tash's TUANS, Frank's Madhack--or Tidbit, or Cray Kid, or whatever
he was next year--Phyllis' Who Else?, and Eric would be back.

Jus' mebee.

Jus' mebee.

Jus' in case, in the words of Who Else?:
