.....IMPRISONED SAN DIEGO ATTORNEY
QUITS STATE JOB AND IS FIRED .....Daniel C. Carson

A San Diego attorney who was given an unpaid leave of absence so he
could keep his state government job while serving a prison term for
drug-trafficking charges was fired yesterday---a day after he resigned.

Leave will no longer be granted in such cases in the future for
Cal-Trans employees, officials announced.

.....$112 IN 'DIAL-A-PORN' CALLS
MADE ON NAVY PHONES ...Michael Abrams

North Island Naval Air Station officials are going to monitor phones
more closely because of the discovery last week that 56 calls were made
to a legal 'dial-a-porn' service.

The calls cost $2 each and the Navy refused to pay the bill. Since
nobody owned up to making the calls, a hat was passed between the
workers to pay the phone bill. No disciplinary action is planned because
it is impossible to determine who participated.

"We've got a dirt bag or two who does something to embarrass us", was
one way it was summed up.

.....DONALD DUCK COLLECTS 291 VOTES IN SWEDEN ...Joseph R. Goldstone

Donald Duck won 291 votes in Sweden's general election two weeks ago,
up 37% from the 1982 election but not enough to elect him to parliament
statistics showed today.

About 26,000 of the 5,619,242 voters cast their ballots for unofficial
candidates, real and unreal, in the Sept. 15 election won by Prime Minister
Olof Palme and the Social Democrats.

Donald Duck collected 291 votes, up from 184 votes in the election three
years ago to finish ahead of Garfield the Cat and the Tax Evader's National
Party, both with one vote. He was on the heels of the European Labor Party,
which won 391 votes.

.....OPTIMISTIC?

It would seem like a case of monumental confidence, but it was a mistake
that a multimillion-dollar hospital in the northern Nigerian city of Kaduna
was built without a morgue.

A local health official was quoted as saying that although $9 million
was spent, a planning error resulted in the omission.

.....THINK RICH

People can now start their Christmas shopping according to Neiman-Marcus.
The fashionable store is offering their "his and her" gift goody, a pair
of natural yellow diamonds- 56 carats for him and 21 for her. Both are
cut from the same stone and the owners will be able to name the stone.

The price tag a mere $2 million (first come first serve).

.....MAN FIGHTS CITY HALL, GETS ARRESTED ..story of the week

A former city commissioner, irate when he discovered he missed the
deadline for filing his mayoral candidacy papers, was arrested as he
tried to kick his way through the locked doors of City Hall.

According to the Miami Herald, the incident began at 5:25 p.m. when
a clerk told Otis Shiver he needed a $100 cashier's check and notarized
papers to file before the 6:00 deadline.

"No one is going to keep me from qualifying today," vowed Shiver, a
retired grocer (way to go Otis). So Shiver sent his lawyer off to find
a notary, while he went to his car for cigarettes. While he was gone....
the clock struck 6:00 and the doors to City Hall were closed and locked.

When Otis returned three policemen blocked his path. "I'm going in
there," Shiver, 66 shouted. Then he stepped forward and smashed his foot
into the door. He was arrested for trespassing after a warning.

He was not allowed to file for the race.

.....SWISS VOTERS GIVE EQUALITY TO WIVES

Swiss voters approved a new marriage law that will give women full
equality with their husbands and no longer require them to get their
spouse's permission to take a job.

In a national referendum, 54.7% of voters decided the head-of family
role exercised by husbands should be shared by both partners, and that
husbands must tell their wives about their earnings, debts and property.

Previously, husbands could legally keep their financial affairs
secret, while women had to disclose theirs.
