This was discussed in some newsgroup or the other (probably net.general :-)) about 2 years ago and the concensus was [drum roll, \please/]: If you have cats, let the loose end hang down away from the person and next to the wall -- makes it much harder for them to jump up and spin the roll and cover your apartment. If you don't have cats, let the loose end hang down conveniently in front (just like Ann Landers says, now children). Uh, oh.
