Gordon Liddy, of Watergate fame, was recently involved in ta da TAX COURT. It seems he didn't pay taxes on the money he received for his part in the break-in at the hotel. The I.R.S. decided that $45,000 of the $375,000 was taxable to him and that he committed fraud by not reporting said money. They also said that Liddy's background, his publicly flaunted "grotesque" morality and destruction of records was proof of his fraudulent intent. The court said "In a rather odd twist, Liddy's testimony was all the more believable and plausible by reason of his bizarre view of right and wrong. Is the court nuts you ask? No. In fraud cases, intent to de- fraud must be proven. It is easy to see how the I.R.S. could look at the career of Mr. Liddy and see nothing but a lifetime dedicated to fraudulent acts, the court decided. But, put simply, Mr. Liddy did not know the difference between right and wrong and it would be unjust to hold him accountable for this crime that required an intent to deceive. The court found him innocent. .....OCEANSIDE POLICE TO KEEP PRESSURE ON PROSTITUTES (story title in San Diego Union..you figure it out) .....UNDERWATER HUM IS AN ENIGMA -- story of the week-- A strange underwater hum is driving a houseboat marina crazy. "It's like a electric razor noise, only 10 or 15 times louder," said harbormaster Ted Rose. " The noise is coming through the water and people are picking it up in the concrete houseboat hulls." The harbormaster got a call from the Navy at Puget Sound and they have exactly the same frequency level as we do - 58 hertz. The hum starts in the summer and comes only at night starting about 9 or 9:15 p.m. and stops at 6:00 a.m. The Sausalito hum is louder this year than ever before. It has been heard for a decade. Rose said the Navy must be interested in the noise because they have asked for all the information collected sofar on the local phenomenon. .....In America Every Day 300 women go into business 127,000 bolts of lightning hit the ground (look out above you) Your name comes up on a computer 35 times Six square miles of skin is grown .....A BIZARRE EPISODE FOR TWA FLIGHT 847 (Newsweek) An oil-company credit card was at the center of what TWA Capt. John Testrake describes as "the most bizarre episode" of the recent Flight 847 hijacking. During its first stop at Algiers the hijackers demanded that the plane be filled up. Airport officials refused saying "You don't have a charge account here; we're not going to put any fuel in the plane." After a long delay a fuel truck pulled up and started putting fuel into the craft. One of the ground crew walked around to a open cockpit window and started shouting for a Shell credit card. A crew member, Uli Derickson, tossed down her Shell card and was promptly charged for 6000 gallons of fuel. When the plane returned a second time the entire sequence was repeated and they wanted her card again. "You've still got it," shouted Testrake. In all $11,000 worth of fuel was charged to Derickson's Shell credit card. TWA said that they will pay the bill.
