[can.politics] The Twins, tax loopholes and the deficit

brad@looking.UUCP (Brad Templeton) (08/02/84)

I agree (not as rabidly) that the Liberals are responsible for our
deficit financing and should be out, but what irks me the most is that
our political system causes Tuna & Baloney to act like siamese twins.

If only we could get doctors to split them apart in only 18 hours!

Sadly, only the NDP and other parties that know they will never get in
are able to have principles. It makes Broadbent look like the only
intelligent man in politics, in spite of the fact that if he got elected
I would probably leave (taking my corporation, and a few jobs with me) for the
USA.

Instead, the two leaders are forced to promise everything vaguely,
commit themselves to nothing, and sling mud. Whatever priniciples the
parties are based on, they are all secondary to "getting the party a
majority." The leaders freely admit the race is about who should be
the government, NOT about who has the best policies. Sorry folks,
you just can't be in favour of free enterprise, capititalism, socialism,
nationalism, regionalism, balanced budgets, lower taxes, world peace
and increased military spending ALL AT THE SAME TIME. But I've heard
them both come out, in vague terms, for all of these.

In my opinion, Joe was a real rarity, in that he actually tried to
make some policies and stick to them. They included many mistakes,
but then I wonder what we would see from the others if they had to
be firm about something. (I like to say Joe had integrity. He made his
mistakes and he STUCK with them!) But I preferred him to what we
have now. I think I'll vote Rhino!
