[can.politics] Rhinoceros party in Quebec

hogg@utcsrgv.UUCP (John Hogg) (08/03/84)

Mark Thompson seems to feel that the Rhino's success at the polls in the last
election shows that the voters of Quebec don't take the future of Canada
seriously, and therefore they don't deserve to have a say in who runs this
country.
This is exactly what many, if not most, Quebec Rhino supporters actually
feel. If a separatist is given a choice between a (Canadian) Grit and a
(Canadian) Tory, it makes sense for him or her to vote for an anarchist Rhino
who thumbs his or her nose at the whole political system. In other provinces
the Rhinoceros party is something else again, but in Quebec it's as valid a
protest vote as any.
What do you want separatists to do - stay away from the polls? Then
you'd just accuse the Frogs of having no interest in politics at all, and say
that they therefore don't deserve the vote!
Ah, for the good old days when Ontario Tory WASPs ran the country and
them furriners knew their places...
