[can.politics] LIFE's version of W.W. II

pkern@utcs.UUCP (who?) (05/27/85)

LIFE's omission of the Canadian contribution seems to reflect
what is one of my favourite topics; American indifference to Canada.
Watching the events of the past half-year seems to suggest that
the US considers Canada as some kind of back yard where one puts
a radar dish or two and where one tests fireworks once in a while.
Nothing to worry themselves about.
Perhaps Canada would get serious attention if we threatened to
become communist (or at least give Ed Broadbent a thrill and go
completely socialist). It seems to work for Nicaragua.
Probably too drastic. All Canada needs to do is cause a bit of trouble
for the American economy. It worked for the Japanese. Now they're getting
all kinds of attention. This includes bestowing upon Japan the title
of US's greatest trading partner. A title which belongs to Canada when
one reviews the facts.
LIFE's error brings to glaring light the American non-attitude towards
Canada. However it seems that we are destined to be ignored for at least
the next four years as the current Tory government seems determined to
snuggle up to the Americans every chance they get.
Thus we are doomed(?) to forever be the all-too-friendly neighbor to the north.
But should I be complaining? All that seems to be at stake
is the dignity of Canada. Dignity doesn't pay the bills.
Does anyone else think this way or am I just paranoid?
