I had this marvelous idea about a year ago, but I'm only just getting around to expressing it publicly. As is, perhaps, well known, it's illegal in Ontario (dunno about the other provinces) to sell cigarettes to minors. There's a warning printed on cigarette vending machines that says: "Minors are forbidden to operate this machine." It's occurred to me that there is no real reason not to take the same approach with beer and liquor... wouldn't it be nice to be able to walk up to a vending machine on a hot day and get yourself a cold beer, or perhaps a mixed drink without having to go into some smelly bar? There should, of course, be a warning on the front of the machine: "This machine may only be operated by persons 19 and over, between noon and 1am." It might be argued that a printed warning is not enough to prevent people from breaking the law, but if we really believed that, we wouldn't have vending machines dispensing cigarettes, would we? -- David Canzi (A drinker who doesn't smoke, in case you were wondering...)
