[can.politics] Glen Babb's Visit To U of T

reid@dciem.UUCP (David Brake c/o Reid Ellis) (01/31/86)

I'm curious that I haven't seen anything here on the visit
of Babb (S. African Ambassador) to U of T to speak. He was
invited 3 times, but the invitation was withdrawn twice. Several
professors here attempted to prevent him from speaking by
getting injunctions against him, even taking their case to
the supreme court! Needless to say, their appeal that he
was hate-mongering was not even heard by the Supreme Court
judges. Though I am against apartheid to a large extent,
I do not hold with their attempt to put him down. Worse still,
when he went to speak the first time, an opposition speaker
threw a speaker's mace at Babb, missing him and injuring
the warden, who deflected it. And here is the crazy part-
the same group of professors who tried (and failed) to keep
him from speaking again have organized a fund to defend his
assailant (I have no idea what the grounds are to be).
Well, that's it for now. I await your flames and other
responses with equanimity.
