[can.politics] life, death, our neighbours

chapman@fornax.uucp (02/24/87)

According to a survey done by a Georg Washington University prof., of
1110 people, "btter dead than red" is stil alive. The subjects were
asked
"Suppose you had to make a decision between fighting an all-out
nuclar war or living under communist rule. How would you decide?"

in a phone interview.

The results: 72% prefer nuclear war
19% prefer to live under a communist rule
              9% did not know

Since all-out nuclear war is basically suicide these people seem to
think that life under communism is worse than no life at all.
While life in the soviets may not be peaches and cream it is apparently
not so bad that the people who live there, and actually know what it is
really like, would rather die than continue living that way.

Now I've always supported the right of "rational" adults to end their lives
at a time of their own choosing but I draw the line when they want to take
me with them. It's too bad the interviewer didn't also ask them

"And do you think you have the right to wipe out the majority
of human life on earth to avoid living under communist rule?"
or even
"Do you think you have the right to wipe out the majority of
human life on earth for any reason?"

These are our friends??
