[can.politics] Canadian culture and free trade

I believe that it is impossible to satisfactorily define a Canadian
cultural identity. However, this does not invalidate the concept of
protecting those means of communication whereby Canadian artists can
reach Canadians without having to go to the U.S.A. to gain acceptance
first.

I feel that foreign domination of the publishing, music, and film
industries greatly obstructs the expression of Canadian points of
view and leads to its replacement with American ideas, American
culture. Protection of significant Canadian ownership of these
industries must be continued. Therefore, even without giving exact
definitions of Canadian culture, I do not see why our government
cannot say that it is not on the trading block when negotiating free
trade with the U.S.A.
