I believe that it is impossible to satisfactorily define a Canadian cultural identity. However, this does not invalidate the concept of protecting those means of communication whereby Canadian artists can reach Canadians without having to go to the U.S.A. to gain acceptance first. I feel that foreign domination of the publishing, music, and film industries greatly obstructs the expression of Canadian points of view and leads to its replacement with American ideas, American culture. Protection of significant Canadian ownership of these industries must be continued. Therefore, even without giving exact definitions of Canadian culture, I do not see why our government cannot say that it is not on the trading block when negotiating free trade with the U.S.A.
