Of course, that's what makes the Roland MPU (Midi Processing Unit) nice. It has it's own microprocessor to handle the real time nature of MIDI data and lets you download to your IBM-PC or APPLE at a not so critical time. -Ron

There is a problem with the MIDI data rate being too slow, and some rumblings of maybe (hopefully) upping the rate in version 2 of the spec. Simultaneous events of more than 2 or 3 notes (for most types of voices) do not sound simultaneous. But, if your synth supports the "running status" mode (i.e., you don't need to send a status byte until it's different than the last one), you can save 320msecs per message by not sending redundant status bytes. It helps, but it doesn't fix the problem. MRees.wbst@xerox.arpa
