[can.politics] canadian price

john@bby-bc.UUCP (07/21/87)

Well unfortunately I got very busy and wasn't able to reply to some
of the postings regarding prices in Canada. I have just posted
a couple of replies to articles I saved at the time.

There was one posting I didn't manage to save (thought I had).
It was long but didn't really say much at all. It began with
some (mild) invective. I can't remember who posted it; there was
however, as I recall, an assertion in it that it is not possible to offer
trans-border warranties. This is simply not true.

-------------------
Most of the replies to my original article seem to make two assertions:

1. Prices are higher because of government interference.

However no has provided any convincing evidence (opinions not counting
as evidence) to substantiate this.

2. Prices are higher because we are not competing directly with the
   US.

The implication of this is that Canadian business will compete with
US businesses but will not compete against other Canadian businesses.
But aren't business people just naturally competitive? Don't they
have a fundamental philosophy that competition is GOOD, or is it
only that competition against foreign devils is GOOD and competition
against fellow Canadian businesses is BAD? (You can apply a :-) wherever
you like).
