I am a little surprised that no one (that I have seen) has yet
mentioned 'Destination: Void' by Frank Herbert. I thought it
was quite good and consider it a classic. It certainly fits
the bill as a computer story since the premise of the plot is
an attempt to create a sentient machine. I admit that I am a
Herbert fan and may be biased in that respect. By the way, his
sequel 'The Jesus Incident' was not nearly as good.
