harry crews wrote about 10 books before he died (recently). his characters are almost always freaks (mentally and/or physically) who lead freaky lives in the freaky south. i find him deeply repugnant, yet exotically irresistable. if you enjoy recent works by southern authors (e.g. walker percy and john kennedy toole) or black humorists (e.g., joseph heller and john barth), you'll likely love/hate harry crews. peter honeyman
