Masterpiece Theater has shown several times the Australian movie
"A Town Like Alice". Does anyone know the book & author that this
movie is taken from?

"A Town Like Alice" was written by the English author Nevile(sp) Shute.
It was published in the US in 1950 under the title "The Legacy" by N. S. Norway.
It has never been clear to me why Nevile Shute Norway used such different
forms of his name in these two countries.

Incidentally, Norway wrote "On the Beach" in the late 50's. It described
the end of the earth due to a nuclear war. It was made into a very moving
film (1960) starring Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire (played a
scientist and never danced!) and Anthony Perkins (played a loving husband
and loyal US sailor).

In all Norway wrote about 25 books, many of which were very good. One,
"The Slide Rule" was autobiographical.

A Town Like Alice was adapted from Neville Shute's novel,
The Legacy.

The movie 'A Town Like Alice' was taken ( quite accurately )
from a Nevil Shute book. The book has been published under
more than one title ( one in the U.S. and one in the U.K.)
The title I read it under was 'The legacy'

"A Town like Alice" was taken from the book of the same name by
Nevil Shute. He's also written some other very good reads.
