The best book that I've read in the past month was "China Men" by Maxine Hong Kingston, the author of "The Woman Warrior". Briefly, the book was an account of the Chinese-American experience told via the stories of the men in the author's family. Kingston showed an ability to write in the wide range of styles needed to go smoothly from the lives of her great-grandparents in China to the experiences of her younger brother who served in Viet Nam. Rather than write this book as a long potboiler of a novel, like so many ethnic melodramas written in recent years, she did it as a collection of short, polished pieces, each unlike the rest and able to stand alone. I was enthralled for the length of the book. -- Prentiss Riddle riddle@ut-sally.UUCP riddle@ut-sally.ARPA
