[net.books] Ayn Rand Fan Replies

   mprvaxa!tbray would like to tell us what is literature and what is not,
where and if we should discuss it. This is reminiscent of a certain
fictional character,  "Ellsworth Toohey".

   Is this a case of life imitating what Ayn Rand fans call "art", or is
this life imitating what tbray might call "garbage"? Ayn Rand's characters
can seem pretty extreme until you encounter people like them in real life.

   Ayn Rand is a very strange writer. If you are scared of reading strange
things, I would agree with tbray that you should stay away, and stick to
Peter Rabbit and J.K. Galbraith - or give up reading entirely and watch TV.
You might just find the concept of freedom boring, and I sincerely think
this is your right, and well within the concept of liberty. But, if you
want your head tweaked in a different and possibly pleasurable way, give
Atlas Shrugged a try.  Skip John Galt's radio speech on the first reading;
save it for your second reading. And third. And fourth...
