[net.books] Hawthorne and Twain

It is fun to read what Twain wrote about Cooper's deerslayer -- he didn't like
it at ALL!

(So I lied in the header -- that's what started me off, anyway)

is quite funny and quite accurate. All the ridiculous incidents
that Twain finds in the novel are actually there. But I
loved Last of the Mohicans, for just the reasons Twain
hated it. It's so absurd, it's funny. And it's an exciting
book, though at times Cooper is a little long-winded.
The TV adaption(BBC I think) was probably better because
it took out the extraneous information and left the silly
and exciting incidents. Unfortunately I haven't seen it on
PBS in over 10 years. Too bad.
