[net.books] A New Book

franka@tekcad.UUCP (Frank Adrian) (12/18/83)

I stumbled upon a quite marvelous book today. The title is "Late
Night Reflections on Listening to Mahler's Ninth Symphony," by Lewis Thomas.
Thomas is the chancellor of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the
book is made up of his essays, published in the New England Journal of Medicine
between 1980 and 1983.
The tone of Thomas' essays can range from informative to humorous to
moving, while the subjects range from biology to physics to nuclear warfare.
The work can basicly be classified under the heading of philosophy of science.
Thomas' book is one of this year's best non-fiction offerings as far as I'm
concerned and should probably be read by anyone with an interest in the nature
of scientific study. It's only out in hardback now and the cost is $12.95 but
I think it's money quite well spent.
	Frank says, "check it out".

   /- -\ but usually underestimated,
