[net.books] Tartan Book Sales

riddle@ut-sally.UUCP (Prentiss Riddle) (01/05/84)

(Although this isn't a commercial and I don't have any connection with
Tartan Books, there is indeed "something in it for me." Those of you
who are offended by even mildly mercenary uses of the net should hit the
"n" key.)

Tartan Book Sales is a discount mail-order bookseller. Unlike many of the
other discount book houses whose catalogs you may have seen, Tartan doesn't
deal in remaindered books or publishers' close-outs; instead, they sell
"slightly used" hardbound books which have spent a few months on the shelves
of public libraries. Thus, most of the books are relatively new and many
are recent bestsellers. All the books I've bought arrived in good condition,
and all are bound in clear plastic jackets to protect them during their
library use. The selection leans heavily to current fiction, including
mysteries, romance and s.f., but non-fiction books are available, too. Prices
tend to fall in the $3.50 to $5.00 range. My most recent order was Jonathan
Schell's "The Fate of the Earth" for $4.49.

You can start receiving Tartan's monthly catalog by dropping a card to:

		Tartan Book Sales
		500 Arch St.
		Williamsport, PA 17705

Now comes the mercenary part: at the moment, Tartan is running a drive to
get new customers. To do so, they are offering a "bounty" on new names for
their mailing list in the form of 25% discount coupons. If instead of
sending your name and address to Tartan yourself you will let me do it for
you, then both you AND I will receive coupons worth a 25% discount on our
next orders. Needless to say, there is no obligation: we're talking about
a free catalog, not a book club.

Whether you send your name in through me or do it yourself, I think you'll
find Tartan worth your while. My father and I have both been satisfied
customers for years.
