[net.books] Alan Turing bio

chip@dartvax.UUCP (Brig ) (02/17/84)

I;'ve nearly finished the alan Turing biography which was recently
published (author Hodgson). I recommend it for anyone interested in
Turing and/or lives of the English Eccentrics and/or a social history
of homosexuality in Britain. It has quite a bit on Turing's work
breaking codes in WWII, the Turing machine, his later interests in
biology, etc--written by a fellow who seems to understand the technical
material.

A few objections. It's about twice as long as it should be--rather
padded. It doesn't include a few of the wonderful Turing stories
which are found (for instance) in Hugh Kenner's "The Counterfeiters"
(a marvellous book on Turing, Andy Warhol, modernism, etc...)

You could order it through the Goliard Bookshop, 27 N Pleasant St,
Amherst Mass 01002, which is where I got my copy.
