[net.books] do ya'll know good books?

rene@nlm-mcs.ARPA (Rene Steiner) (06/29/84)

I've decided to spend some time reading some "classics" - not
necessarily the books that are called "classic", but books that I
ought to have read. I feel that books like 1984 and Brave New World
are books that everyone ought to read. I prefer happier books, of
course, but I'm still surprised when I meet people who haven't read
1984.

Anyway, what I'd like are suggestions on good books that I ought to
read. Like I said, I prefer happy endings, and I know I won't get
through it if it's not well written and somewhat entertaining (I DID
read through "Grapes of Wrath", which goes to show that even an
unpleasant story can be read if it's written well), so send me your
suggestions. I'll compile and post the results in a couple of weeks,
unless I get a lot of letters saying this has been done before. (I cry
easily, so no rough flames, please. :-)). Two I've been considering
are "Oliver Twist" and "Huckleberry Fin". Oh, yeah, send authors (I've
assumed people know the authors to the five books I've mentioned
above, but I probably shouldn't have).

Thanks!
