[net.books] Moby Dick

chuqui@nsc.UUCP (Chuq Von Rospach) (08/02/84)

No offense, don, but I find Moby Dick to be just about as interesting as
most translations of Milton (~Ok, don't write this down, but I find Milton
just as boring as you find Milton. Milton's wife found him boring, too~). I
MUCH prefer Don Quixote as a classic to point people to. If you really want
sea oriented material try 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner' or 'Rboinson
Crusoe'.

One more time from the top. Six beats, alright? One, two, three..

Chuqui, how can you say such nasty things about old Moby? The great
thing about "Moby Dick" is that it can be read on so many levels -- not
only is it a psychologically and socially complex work that will be
debated by scholars for generations, but it's an adventure yarn, too!
Whichever angle you approach it from, it's a rewarding book. (Which is,
perhaps, one of the things "Don Quixote" has going for it, too.)

While I wouldn't call Moby Dick the best book I have ever read, I did
find it very rewarding. There are passages, examples of which were
given us by Don (Thanks for that one, Don! I loved it.), that are
tremendous. Sure, some of the book is a slow grind, but it is worth
the effort.

However, if you just want entertainment, forget it. This book is for
those who think about life.

I agree that Herman Melville is adept at the descriptive language and
that Moby Dick is a very interesting story. I find, though, that it has
some of the most boring chapters in English prose that I have ever read.

I much prefer Billy Budd.

What's a good, preferably available, translation of Don Quixote?
