The best source of information about book stores in any U.S. town or city is "American Book Trade Directory", published annually by R.R.Bowker Co. This is a book trade publication, but you can find it in large libraries. It lists and classifies virtually every book store in the U.S. and Canada. For example: Someone asked about used-book stores in the Chicage area. My 27'th (1981) edition (which is a little dated) lists 7 stores specializing in used (as distinct from Antiquarian) books in Chicago proper. The two biggest are Andrews Bookstore, 4412 N Milwaukee, 60630 (15,000 vols), and Fireside Books, 7101 N Glenwood Ave., 60626 (10,000 vols). Another way to find such information is to find a library with a section of telephone directories, and look in the yellow pages. In my experience, most large libraries have all the directories for the local state, and the directories of the biggest remaining U.S. cities. But these can be quite dated.
