[net.books] Books on Tape

billc@sun.uucp (Bill Courington) (10/09/84)

I have now "read" three books from "Books On Tape," Newport
Beach, California. Their service is prompt and efficient, the readers
are uniformly excellent. Recording quality is erratic, but
intelligible. Prices are generally $12-16 for a one-month rental.
This is expensive compared to buying a book, but that's not a
fair comparison. To me, getting in some good reading in otherwise
wasted time on the freeway is worth the price.

Their toll-free number is 1-800-626-3333. The address is:

Does anyone know of another company offering a similar service?

I heartily agree that net.books should get back to the business of books
and move the other discussions (ie pornography) to other net groups.

SO...here's a new topic:

I have only recently started working 9-5 again (actually, 8:15 to 5), and
since I drive to work, I have lost a considerable amount of reading time.
I was very unhappy about this until I found a service which I think that
people in this file would be interested in.

There is a place in California call "Books on Tape" which records complete
books and then rents them out for a very reasonable rate for a 30 day period.
(reasonable = $12-15 for 4-9 cassettes, this includes postage both ways).
Their catalogue is 160 pages long and they have everything from SF to
classics, recent best sellers, history, biography, novels, self improvement
books, etc. The tapes are in stereo and the books are read by professional
actors and actresses. They are *not* dramatizations, but good readings in
clear and pleasant voices. So far I have "heard" three books this way, and
have really enjoyed them. I find that my 35+ minute commute is much more
pleasant, and it doesn't feel like wasted time.

If people are interested, I will be happy to share more information with them
about Books on Tape. They have a good deal for those who rent: for each
new person you bring to the service, you receive one free rental (which is
worth from $9.50 to about 20.00.) If a few people are interested, we could
all benefit from this offer by each "introducing" another person to the
service and get to rent a book for free....

So, let's hear from you! Do you want to read more? Do you want to use
your commuting time well? This is the chance to do it!

Sorry...I got carried away......
