[net.books] Looking for Book Covers

ewok@ucbvax.ARPA (Lisa Rodgin) (02/15/85)

I am looking for a supplier of book covers, the plastic
kind such as one might find on a library book. Does anyone know
if there is any place for a person, not a library, to buy these
in reasonable small quantities? A source in the California Bay
Area would be preferred of course....

I think this might be of general interest, so I'm posting this intead of using
mail.

	Demco, Inc.
	P.O.Box 7488

Is possibly the world's largest supplier of anything a library might want.
I have bought everything from KikSteps to slow-grab adhesive plastic film
(great for preserving conference proceedings) to bookends to book repair tape
from them. They have a 300 page catalog, and two toll-free numbers:
	orders:	(800) 356-1200
	info: (800) 356-8394
These numbers are different in wisconsin. call 800 directory assistance.
Their service is fast, and their inventory is huge. I've had only one
out-of-stock in 10 orders or so.

You may want to ask to see your local library's copy of their catalog;
I found out about it by asking my librarian.

They have five or six pages of plastic book covers or material to make your
own.

You can get them mail order from Demco, a business supply firm. (They also
sell book tape.) I don't have an address for them, but you can probably get
it from any office supply firm (they can probably give you a catalog, too).
The local science fiction club/library orders from them regularly.

Demco is a library-supply business. Also try Gaylord (another
library supplier). Ask your friendly librarian for addresses.

Called Demco for their catalog the day I saw the net posting which included
their 800 numbers (either the 20th or 21st); got the catalog in Monday's
(the 25th) mail. Fast service, however, is not cheap. Glancing through
it, the wife and I noticed quite a few items priced at essentially full
retail list, even in quantity, though available from numbers of other
sources at substantial discounts -- items like Mura headphones, record
inner sleeves, cardboard magazine boxes, etc., all were priced high.

For items unavailable from other than library-supply stores, if you
must have the exact thing, you probably cannot find another supplier
for less, and might as well go with them. For other items, though,
I caution you to comparison shop. I think you'll otherwise pay too
much for the convenience of having a single source for a wide range
of items.
