[net.books] Paperback Book Club request

ccv@lambda.UUCP (Curt Villars) (03/06/85)

I'm interested in getting information on paperback book clubs
(i.e. Book of the Month Club type). I would appreciate
any information (pro & con) concerning paperback book clubs.

                                       Thanks in advance,
                                        Curt Villars

I belong to the Quality Paperback Book Club and have by and large been
pleased with it. Their paperbacks are good quality, they occasionally
have boxed sets, they carry a variety of current titles, including
computer and science books, and their prices are not bad. They also
have a bonus point system in which you amass X points for each book you
buy, and when you have enough you can select another book for free.

When I joined, several years ago, there was no minimum purchase
requirement to offset the free books I got either. Unlike some clubs,
any book they offer can be had for free as a bonus.

I recommend them highly.

I was a QPB Club member for a couple of years, and liked it too. Good titles,
usually well-produced volumes. Best of all, you're under no obligation to
buy any specified number of books -- if you really want to, you can just
keep sending back their little cards every month saying no, really, you dont
want this month's selection. But you'll probably find something worth buying.
And the prices are very reasonable.

I just ordered a book from Publisher's Clearing House. It was a book
on the French Impressionistic Painters, and I got the thing today. I must say
that I was quite pleased about the quality of the book; it looked and read as
well as it did in the cataglogue.
My only complaint was the length of time that it took to get the
bloody thing here -- the order form said two weeks, the actual time was a month.
The price of postage vs. the size and bulk of the book was not too bad, and the
book was recieved in very nice shape.
Other info as to the company's catalogue:
1)The catalogue's prices are very hard to beat, at least for the things I've
  seen.

2)Selection may be in need of improvement, but I do admit that the type and
publications vary from one catalogue to the next.
3)Address is as follows:
	Publisher's Clearing House
	1 Champion Ave.
	Avenel, N.J. 07001

  Hope I was of service!
