.DS For those planning a trip to India in the near future, there is an excellent book that far surpasses anything written before on Indian travel in the depth and detail of its coverage and scope: INDIA IN LUXURY by Louise Nicholson Published in London by Century Publishers at 10.95 sterling. This L. Nicholson has plumbed the depths and spared no effort in traversing the far corners of India to bring to readers a sample of How to Spend It in India. For a splendid review, see the Financial Times (of London) of Saturday, March 27. A quote from the book: "The instant the designs come out in Milan and Paris, the Indians copy them...As recommendation, the Italians come to pick up this year's Guccis, the French their Cardins. Since India does not import either make, their copyrights do not extend here, so the blatant piracy is not illegal. And you can get them for about a fifth of the price in Paris or Milan." And another: "Indian craftsmanship in all fields can be of very high quality. The craftsmen serve an Indian public who still keep their money in gold, gems and silk. It is worth buying the best and avoiding the junk produced for tourists and sold from stalls beside monuments." Sanjay Modak AT&T .DE
