Thanks for bringing up a topic close to my heart,i.e.,books
about India (by Indians & others). At the outset i would like to
classify them in two very broad groups : fiction and non-fiction.
My non-fiction selection would include the following (and
 many more):
Jawaharlal Nehru -- Glimpses of World History,
                            The Discovery of India
Mohandas K. Gandhi -- The Story of my Experiences with Truth
    S. Dasgupta -- History of Indian Philosophy,
History of Sanskrit Literature (and many more)
    S. Radhakrishnan -- Eastern Religion and Western Thought,
                            Philosophy of the Upnishadas, Bhagvadgita,
                            (and many many other books)
(In my opinion he was one of the great philosophers of this century)
Wendy O'Flaherty -- Rig Veda (Penguin Classics -- Easy to read)
Karma & Rebirth in Classic Indian Traditions
Khushwant Singh -- History of the Sikhs (2 vols., Princeton
                            Univ. Press -- excellent)
This is an abridged list and has some obvious omissions. I am
listing only those books which are easily available in bookstores. Fellow
booklovers across the net(s) can help complete the above list. My fiction
 selections in the next posting.
