[net.books] Ernest Bramah and Kai Lung

I tried to reach Lisa Chabot a couple of times about her quest for "Kai
Lung's Golden Hours", but the address keeps getting bounced... maybe
Bramah is of interest to enough other people to try this way. As Ning Hy
or somebody says, "Where the path forks, there stand two Ning Hys." For
those of you who don't know Ernest Bramah, it's probably enough to tell
you that he was Lord Peter Wimsey's favorite author.

I found two copies of "Kai Lung's Golden Hours" here in the Santa Monica
area a month ago, and bought one. They were both about $7.50, and apparently
the first American edition, sometime in the '20's.

If you're in the Toronto area or want to make a phone call, I saw two more
copies of it on Monday when I was there. The Santa Monica one is the
edition with the picture on the front cover; the Toronto ones were about
the same, each a smaller and thinner edition with (I think) a solid blue
cover. One of those was $10 and one was $7.50 (Canadian). That store
was an SF bookstore called Bakka, with a very complete selection of SF.
This was one of the few non-SF books there; it was on the island just past
the up-ramp, in case you talk to them. The phone number is 416-596-8161
and the address is 282 Queen St. West, Toronto M5V 2A1.

I finally found a copy of "The Wallet of Kai Lung" on this trip.
Unfortunately it was very expensive, but I was hard up. Also on this
trip my wife spotted "Kai Lung Unrolls His Mat", so my collection is
increasing. I also got an awful edition of Bramah's Max Carrados
mysteries; don't know whether they're any good, but the printing is
a lousy photocopy process. Ah well, the words are there.

One dealer at a rare book store says that Ernest Bramah's books are getting
popular again, so it's becoming very hard to find them, especially at a
reasonable price. Sigh. Time for a new edition.

Now, can anybody find me a copy of Lady Caroline Lamb's _Glenarvon_? It
was reprinted in the mid-1800's as _The Fatal Passion_.
