I have noticed more and more pperback books with covers that are embossed, so that the title lettering is raised above the surface. Also, sometimes the illustration is enhanced with such embossing. Have there been some recent embellishments in printing technology that have made it simple to do such "fancy-fying" of the book covers? I'm sure that the incremental cost of doing this is probably much less than a cent per book; is this tactile enhancement merely one way of trying to make buyers believe that price increases of 50 cents per book or so are justified? Anyone have any info from the trade press on this subject? (I've also noticed more books with funny-cut covers, or holes cut in the covers for see-through illustrations; I assume this is part of the same technology and trend.)
