[net.books] Hunter S. Thompson: HELL'S ANGELS

Yes, I too was a Hunter S. Thompson virgin until midway through this
semester. I read "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and thought it was very
funny, but not FANTASTIC or anything (it reminded me of Jack Kerouac's "On the
Road," gone hopelessly insane and desperate). But just the other day, "Hell's
Angels" kept me up until 5 in the morning - though some of the style is
similar, it is in general a much more subdued and thoughtful book - and much
better. I recommend it highly to anyone with even a marginal interest in the
Angels or in '60's campus highbrow intellegentsia (yes, highbrow. Read the
section about the Angels' attack on the Berkeley antiwar protesters, and the
rationale behind the Angels' appeal for the radical/liberal academic types,
and the inherent contradictions therein.
