[net.books] Books-On-Tape

-------

I am 'hooked' on books-on-tape. I have a 30 minute (one-way) commute to
work and rather than listen to the radio, I listen to a BOT. 'BOT' is
actually the name of one company that rents these tapes, but I am using
the phrase generically. My purpose in 'going to the net' with this subject
is to ask for reviews, both positive and negative, from other people who
have listened to BOTs. I am about to order some more and am looking for
some good input on what to get. As you would suspect, the BOT catalogs make
every book sound great. Here are some of my recent listenings w/nano-reviews.

The Key to Rebecca - Ken Follett A great spy adventure concerning the
German/British confrontation in Egypt/North Africa in WW II. Well
    written and well read.

The Agony and Ecstasy - Irving Stone (ordered as Part I and Part II)
The life story of Michelangelo. Excellent.

The Ice Palace - Edna Farber In Alaska just prior to statehood, this
book follows the lives of 4 unique and influential people.
    Absolutely TERRIBLE. I hated it.

Do you have any strong reactions to a BOT you've heard? I would like to
hear from you !

Your suggestion about listening to books on tape during a commute is a
good one that I have been planning to follow. Meanwhile, I learned
enough French to 'get by' in Paris via a Berlitz tape.

You might check your local public library for tapes. I have seen most
of the titles mentioned in the referenced note there.
