I want to second the recommendation to read the Oz books. I had three available to me as a child and I loved them! I think my all-time favorite is "The Lost Princess of Oz." The following is a list of all the books I know about: by L. Frank Baum 1. The Wizard of Oz 2. The Land of Oz 3. Ozma of Oz 4. Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz 5. The Road to Oz 6. The Emerald City of Oz 7. The Patchwork Girl of Oz 8. Tik-Tok of Oz 9. The Scarecrow of Oz 10. Rinkitink in Oz 11. The Lost Princess of Oz 12. The Tin Woodsman of Oz 13. The Magic of Oz 14. Glinda of Oz by Ruth Plumly Thompson (the Royal Historian of Oz) 15. The Royal Book of Oz 16. Kabumpo in Oz 17. The Cowardly Lion of Oz 18. Grampa in Oz 19. The Lost King of Oz 20. The Hungry Tiger of Oz 21. The Gnome King of Oz 22. The Giant Horse of Oz 23. Jack Pumpkinhead of Oz 24. The Yellow Knight of Oz * 25. Pirates in Oz * 26. The Purple Prince of Oz * 27. - 33. to be published; I don't know the titles * - to be released in July The first 14 are variously available in paperback; I was lucky enough to find hardbacks. The last 19 are being released three at a time by Del-Rey. If you are not familiar with these books, but you liked the movie, check them out. The books are *much* more fun than the movie and most are a lot better than the first book. L. Frank Baum used to incorporate ideas sent to him by children and the books are written so children can enjoy the magic, but adults can enjoy the puns (there are lots of those). Baum has also written numerous other books, some of whose characters appear briefly in the Oz books. Lately I've seen in print: The Magical Monarch Of Mo and Queen Zixi Of Ix The latter is one of the finest fairy tales ever written, with illustrations that surpass those of the Oz books. If you ever have the opportunity to see the movies made by Baum, don't pass up the chance. They played for a few weeks here in Cambridge. They stay much closer to the books than later movies, and have much the same flavor as the illustrations. I'll never forget the scene when the Scarecrow meets the Patchwork Girl and falls in love.... -- Mike Huybensz ...decvax!genrad!mit-eddie!cybvax0!mrh
