[net.books] looking for children's book

slj@mtung.UUCP (Steven Jones) (03/12/86)

I am trying to find the title or author of a children's
book I read in 3rd or 4th grade.

There was this pig (who might have been a detective) and
there were these Martians.

That is just about all I remember except one thing: the
pig, I believe, had been told he talked too much. Someone
suggested he think more about what he said before he said
it. The remedy proposed was that he not use words with R's
in them. The forethought required to come up with non-R
words was to keep him thinking rather than talking.

I hope this rings a bell out there for somebody. Please
reply by email (and, as usual, if there is enough
interest I will summarize and post results to the net...).

This rings a bell with me, but I can't help you. I would like to
hear what you find out. I remember this as a series of books for
perhaps 5th or 6th grade, starring an adventuresome pig, usually
pictured on the cover in overcoat and deerstalker hat, with a
sidekick I cannot describe (kids?). And I remember I tried to
read every single one of them. Can anyone give me a title or
an author? Thanks in advance for your help.

I have some vague memory of devouring about two dozen books in
grades 3-5, all having to do with Freddie the Pig and the other very
human-like animals who shared the farm with him. As I recall,
Freddie was a part-time detective, sometime politician/baseball
manager/spy, dealt with Martians, and was the deadly enemy of a gang
of rats. If this blur of images reminds anyone of the author's name
(a woman, as I recall, who wrote in the late 50's-early 60's), I'd
like to hear about it!
