A re-reading of the first chapter of Genesis shows that generic man was created about the same time as the beasts of the field. It was only after Earth went into beta test and God had taken some time off, that He had enough reliability statistics to attempt a custom job--Adam (Advanced Digital-Analog Man)*. Therefore, there were people around for the sons of Adam to marry (without the ill effects of in-breeding that we see, for example, in net.suicide). It's my understanding that whether Adam was the prototype man is still a hot issue among biblical nit-pickers. In my rare religio-philosophical moods, I tend to ignore such non-issues in favor of biblical paradoxes like why a merciful god sends down 10 plagues and 7 years of famine. Questions like Adam's illegitimate birth I reserve for Jehovah's witnesses who wake me up on Saturday mornings.
