For a really scathing attack on conventional biblical piety, see Mark Twain's "Letters From the Earth". I won't offer any excerpts, because once he gets going, it's hard to stop him. This goes way beyond mere poking fun. It justifies the wonderment that a physics professor of mine had that Twain could remain such a sentimental American favorite after expressing such bitterly anti-religious sentiments. I suppose his continued favored status is a reflection of the same dislocation between content and perception that Twain points out in this essay. Lew Mammel, Jr. ihuxr!lew
